Paul Wycherley

Paul Wycherley started kayaking in 1998 at the age of 12 at Wey Kayak Club in Guildford, United Kingdom alongside Liam Heath. At the age of 15 he started racing in crew boats for Great Britain at Marathon. In his final junior year 2004, Paul won the Junior World Marathon Championships in K1, and came 7^th in K1 1000m at European Championships.

That winter he moved to Budapest to train with the Hungarian team for four months. On his return to the UK he was selected for the Great Britain National Senior team and trained under Alex Nikoronov, achieving bronze in K2 at the U23 European Championships. In the following years he raced at every Senior World Championships from until his retirement.

Paul is over 20 times UK National Champion across 500m and 1000m in K1, K2 and K4. He has also held the fastest National times over 1000m in K2 and K4. In 2011, Paul beat the reigning 2008 Olympic Champion, Tim Brabants, to represent Great Britain in K1 1000m in a time of 3minutes 26 seconds. Paul went on to the Olympic qualifiers & World Championships shortly after that race and won the B-final. 

Also in 2011, Paul broke the Guiness World Record for the fast crossing of the English Channel (36km) by Canoe/Kayak in a time of 2hours and 28 minutes breaking the previous record by an hour. He also holds the record for paddling across Lake Geneva Switzerland. 

Paul retired in 2012 after missing out on being selected for the London 2012 Olympics. He went on to pursue a career in sales and also set up a doggy daycare business in London.
